Best credit cards for hotel points and free nights in Japan

Hotel points are the redemption whose value moves the most, because most chains now price rooms dynamically. That cuts both ways: a night in a peak week can be worth several times what the same points return as a statement credit, and a night in a quiet week can be worth less.

How these five were chosen

The five are computed, not chosen. A card scores for being categorised as a hotel card by its issuer, for its published base rate, and for having a hotel redemption route recorded in its points programme; a card whose record states there is no hotel route is excluded outright. Ties go to the cheaper card to hold. Nothing scores for approval likelihood, and no campaign or signup bonus is counted.

How to maximise hotel value

  1. Price the night in yen before you book it in points

Divide the cash price of the exact room, on the exact date, by the points it costs. That number is what your points are worth on that booking. Compare it against what the same points return as a statement credit and take the higher one — every time, not as a rule of thumb.

  2. Dynamic pricing rewards flexibility, not loyalty

Where a chain prices awards dynamically, the same room costs different points on different dates. Shifting a night either side of a peak often halves the cost, which is a bigger lever than any earning rate on this page.

  3. Treat a free-night certificate as a deadline

Certificates earned on renewal usually expire within a year and are often capped by a room value. An unused certificate is worth nothing, so book it early and against an expensive night rather than a convenient one.

  4. Weigh elite status by the nights you will actually stay

Status earned from card spend is worth what its benefits return over your real travel year. For a handful of nights, breakfast and a late checkout rarely justify a five-figure annual fee on their own.

  5. Check whether the route is direct or a partner conversion

Some programmes reach hotels only by converting into another currency first, which costs a ratio and adds a second set of rules. The route column on this page says which kind you are looking at.

What to put on the card

Stays at the chain the card is tied to

Co-brand cards pay their highest rate on spend at the chain’s own properties, and that is where the earning and the status conditions both point.

Travel spend that the programme counts

Flights, rail and travel agencies often earn at the card’s ordinary rate but count towards the annual-spend thresholds that unlock free nights or status.

Everyday spend, only while chasing a threshold

Pushing ordinary spend onto a hotel card makes sense while a spend threshold is in reach and stops making sense the moment it is met. After that, a higher-rate general card is usually worth more.

Not: spend you would not otherwise make

A threshold reached by buying things you did not need costs more than the free night returns. This is the single most expensive mistake in hotel programmes.

Where each programme’s points can go

Every points programme in the research that records a hotel route, with the route as recorded and the cards that earn in it. Several reach hotels only through a partner conversion, which the route text says explicitly.
