Permanent Points (Saison Eikyu Fumetsu) guide

Credit Saison’s no-expiry point currency: how it is earned, what a point is actually worth, and where the “永久不滅” promise stops.

Direct answers

Permanent Points are Credit Saison’s card currency and carry no expiry date while your membership is valid; earning is about 1 point per ¥1,000, and a point is worth roughly ¥5 on the better routes.

Key points

  • Operator: Credit Saison; earned across the Saison card range including the Saison Amex products.
  • No expiry date while the membership remains valid — the headline feature of the program.
  • Base earning is about 1 point per ¥1,000 of monthly spend, worth roughly ¥5 on stronger routes (~0.5%).
  • Saison Pearl Amex pays an elevated rate on QUICPay via Apple Pay / Google Pay, subject to an annual cap.
  • “No expiry” applies to the points, not the card — points are lost if the membership ends.

How Permanent Points are earned

Permanent Points (永久不滅ポイント) are the currency of Credit Saison cards, from the no-fee Saison Card International through the Saison Amex range to the gold and platinum tiers. Base accrual is one point per ¥1,000 including tax of eligible monthly spend, calculated on the monthly total. Individual cards then layer conditional uplifts on top: the Saison Pearl American Express card pays an elevated rate — published as up to about 2% in value — on QUICPay payments routed through Apple Pay or Google Pay, up to an annual spending cap, and the Rose Gold and Gold Associé products apply higher multiples to overseas spend or to member-selected categories. Those uplifts each depend on the stated payment route, registration or category, so they should never be read as the card’s base rate.

What “no expiry” is really worth

The distinguishing feature is that points do not expire. That genuinely removes the most common way people lose value — a balance quietly lapsing — and it makes the program a reasonable fit for someone whose card spending is light or irregular. Two caveats matter. First, the promise attaches to the points, not to your relationship with the issuer: if the membership ends, whether by cancellation or otherwise, the balance goes with it, so “permanent” is not the same as “yours forever regardless”. Second, no expiry does not raise the exchange rate. Points redeem for items, gift cards, other loyalty currencies, airline miles and statement credits, and the effective value per point varies by route, commonly landing around ¥5 on the stronger options — which is what puts the base return near 0.5%. A card that never lets points lapse but pays 0.5% is still beaten, on pure return, by a 1% card whose points you actually spend.

Who this is for

  • Light or irregular card users who dislike tracking expiry dates

What this is not

  • People optimising purely for the highest headline earn rate
Important cautions
  • Points survive time but not cancellation — closing the account forfeits the balance.

Frequently asked questions

Which major points do not expire?

Ordinary PayPay Points currently have no expiration, while PayPay limited-time points do. Among cards, Saison Permanent Points (永久不滅ポイント) also do not expire. Most other programs use a one- to two-year window or extend the balance with activity, so a program with no expiry reduces the risk of losing a slowly accumulating balance.

Do points expire in Japan, and how do I avoid losing them?

Many do. Some points expire a fixed period after earning; others (like campaign or “limited-time” points) expire much sooner than regular points. To avoid losing them, concentrate on one ecosystem so balances stay active, spend limited-time points quickly on everyday items, and check the expiry rules in the app. Do not spend more just to “use up” points — that defeats the purpose.
