Setup, currencies, and fees
SMBC provides online remittance via SMBC Direct after advance enrolment and beneficiary registration, plus branch service. It supports seven sending currencies — six foreign currencies plus yen. Online fees are ¥3,000 to SMBC overseas entities and ¥3,500 to other overseas banks; a sender-paid related-bank fee is ¥2,500, and lifting or JPY handling is 0.05% with a ¥2,500 minimum.
Published FX margins include about ¥1 per USD and ¥1.40 per EUR, which are the real cost on a conversion. A recall or amendment costs ¥4,000. Incoming foreign-currency-to-yen receipts generally carry ¥1,500, and same-currency or yen receipt can also attract 0.05% (minimum ¥2,500) depending on the route.
My Number, registration, and timing
My Number and identity-document uploads are required. Beneficiary registration can take one to two weeks during the ISO 20022 transition, and pre-2024 beneficiary records may need re-registration from August 2026 — so plan ahead and re-check a saved recipient before a time-critical transfer.
Because setup and registration are front-loaded, SMBC suits residents who will send repeatedly to the same beneficiaries rather than a one-off urgent payment.
Who this is for
- SMBC customers sending regularly to registered beneficiaries
- People wanting a major-bank wire in one of seven currencies
What this is not
- Urgent one-off transfers before registration completes
- Small transfers where fixed fees dominate
- Pre-2024 beneficiary records may require re-registration from August 2026 — verify before sending.
