A licensed money-transfer service that uses the mid-market exchange rate with a transparent, upfront fee — often cheaper than bank wires for personal transfers.
When a bank wire is the right tool and when a specialist wins — by amount, speed, cash need, documentation, and complexity — so you pick the right rail instead of assuming.
Specialists usually win small transfers and cash or wallet payouts; banks win where a beneficiary insists on a SWIFT wire, formal documentation is needed, or the amount exceeds a specialist’s limit — and for large amounts a negotiated bank FX rate can beat a specialist.
Banks are often preferable where the beneficiary specifically requires a SWIFT wire, the transaction involves property or a regulated investment account, a bank-issued proof of remittance is required, or the amount exceeds a remittance provider’s approved limit. They are less attractive for small payments because fixed fees, exchange spreads, and correspondent deductions are a large percentage of the amount.
Specialists are usually stronger for smaller transfers, cash pickup, and mobile-wallet payouts, and they can show the recipient amount up front while avoiding some correspondent deductions. Foreign-currency deposits are available at selected banks, whereas a specialist gives you a wallet balance rather than a conventional deposit. Tracking is app-based with specialists and via bank inquiry or SWIFT/gpi with banks.
For a large documented transfer, banks are strong — particularly with a negotiated FX rate above a threshold — while Type I specialists (such as Wise up to ¥150 million for qualifying transfers) work within their limits. Recipient-exact-amount needs can be met by a bank fee instruction (not certain) or, often more cleanly, by a local-payout specialist.
For a complex property or inheritance payment, a bank is often preferable and should be coordinated with professionals. Returns and amendments differ too: a bank does a formal, sometimes costly recall, while a specialist offers app support but still may be unable to cancel after payout.
