Beginner-friendly cloud accounting built around guided workflows, popular with sole proprietors for blue-return filing and e-Tax.
Registration, income classification, expenses, bookkeeping, blue returns, consumption tax, and filing.
A freelancer reports business income (receipts minus necessary expenses), keeps books, can elect the blue return for a special deduction and loss carryforward, tests consumption-tax liability separately, and files a return each year — income-tax profit is not the same as taxable sales.
Effective: 2026-01-01 to 2026-12-31
Professional review pending — treat as draft and confirm with the authorities.
You can be taxed on business income before filing an opening notification, but you should file it and, to get the best deduction, apply for the blue return by the deadline. Keep books capturing date, counterparty, account, tax treatment, and evidence; separate a business account; and reconcile monthly. Your income-tax profit (receipts minus expenses minus any blue deduction) drives income tax.
Beyond income tax, watch resident tax (billed next year), individual enterprise tax (for designated businesses), and consumption tax (tested on taxable sales, not profit). A registered qualified-invoice issuer is liable for consumption tax even below ¥10M sales. Reserve cash for all of these — a common freelancer cash-flow mistake is budgeting only for income tax.

Many employees do not, because tax is settled by year-end adjustment (年末調整). You generally must file (確定申告) if you have side income over ¥200,000, two or more employers, self-employment income, sizeable investment or crypto gains, or you want to claim deductions like large medical costs or a first-year mortgage credit. Filing season is Feb 16 – Mar 15 via e-Tax. When unsure, check the NTA guidance or ask a 税理士.
