How to compare international transfer quotes

A repeatable, same-time methodology for comparing providers on the recipient amount for an identical total sender debit — the only fair way to find the cheapest route for your transfer.

Direct answers

Get quotes from every provider at the same moment for the same total sender debit, currency, destination, funding, and payout method, then compare the recipient amount — the effective rate — not the advertised fee.

Key points

  • The correct comparison unit is recipient money per total sender debit — the effective rate.
  • Standardize the quote time, sender debit, currencies, destination, funding, fee instruction, delivery method, and speed tier.
  • Effective rate = recipient amount ÷ total sender debit; total effective cost is the gap from the mid-market benchmark.
  • Exclude first-transfer promotions from the standard comparison, or show them separately.

Standardize before you compare

Providers do not publish one universal all-in rate, so a fair comparison needs identical inputs. Hold these constant across every quote: the quote time (the same minute or a tight window), the total sender debit (the same amount including all sender-paid charges), the source and delivery currencies, the destination country and recipient bank or payout method, the funding method (bank transfer, debit, credit, or cash), the fee instruction (OUR/SHA/BEN where offered), the delivery method (bank account, wallet, or cash pickup), and the speed tier.

Exclude first-transfer promotions from the standard comparison, or record them on a separate line — they distort a like-for-like read of ongoing cost.

The four numbers that matter

Effective rate = recipient amount ÷ total sender debit. Benchmark recipient amount = total sender debit × mid-market foreign currency per JPY. Total effective cost in JPY = (benchmark recipient − actual recipient) ÷ mid-market foreign currency per JPY. Total effective cost % = total effective cost in JPY ÷ total sender debit × 100.

A quick illustration using a benchmark of ¥160.235 per USD: on a ¥300,000 debit the benchmark recipient is about USD 1,872. If Provider A delivers USD 1,859 and Provider B delivers USD 1,823, A’s effective cost is roughly ¥1,100 (0.37%) and B’s roughly ¥7,800 (2.6%) — even if B advertised a lower fee. These figures are calculator demonstrations, not live quotes.

Who this is for

  • Anyone choosing between providers for a specific transfer
  • People who want a repeatable worksheet, not a fixed ranking

What this is not

  • Readers wanting a single “cheapest provider today” without collecting quotes
Important cautions
  • No provider is universally cheapest; the winner changes with amount, corridor, funding, payout method, and the moment you quote.
