PayPay Points ecosystem guide

How PayPay Points are earned through PayPay Step and campaigns, and why ordinary points do not expire.

Direct answers

PayPay is Japan’s dominant QR wallet; ordinary PayPay Points do not expire and redeem at ≈¥1, PayPay Step conditions govern earning, and points can exchange one-to-one with V Points (with limits).

Key points

  • Operator: PayPay Corporation; app account with Japanese mobile authentication.
  • Ordinary PayPay Points have no expiration; limited-time points expire.
  • PayPay Step (with required KYC since June 2, 2026) governs the earn rate.
  • Point-funded portions do not earn Step rewards; points cannot be sent or withdrawn.
  • One-to-one V Point exchange from 100 points, with daily/monthly limits.

Earning, Step, and campaigns

PayPay is a code-payment platform accepted at a very large merchant network, including convenience stores, retail chains, and small shops. You register in the app with Japanese mobile authentication. Earning is governed by PayPay Step, whose eligibility depends on payment method and monthly conditions; since June 2, 2026 identity verification is required, and any portion paid with PayPay Points is excluded from Step rewards. Frequent nationwide campaigns and lotteries add value, but their advertised “up to” rates assume perfect eligibility.

No-expiry ordinary points, use, and exchange

The headline advantage is that ordinary PayPay Points have no expiration, so casual small-merchant spending accumulates without expiry pressure; limited-time points do expire and are usable only in designated LINE Yahoo services. Ordinary points (≈¥1) can pay for any PayPay balance purchase, and some bill payments, but points cannot be sent to friends or withdrawn — only eligible PayPay Money can. Since March 2026, points can exchange one-to-one with V Points from 100 points, subject to daily and monthly limits.

Who this is for

  • QR-payment users and convenience-store shoppers

What this is not

  • People who need withdrawable cash rewards
Important cautions
  • PayPay is not a general foreign-card workaround; supported card registration and 3-D Secure rules apply.

Frequently asked questions

Which major points do not expire?

Ordinary PayPay Points currently have no expiration, while PayPay limited-time points do. Among cards, Saison Permanent Points (永久不滅ポイント) also do not expire. Most other programs use a one- to two-year window or extend the balance with activity, so a program with no expiry reduces the risk of losing a slowly accumulating balance.

Can PayPay Points become V Points?

Yes, one-to-one from 100 points, once per day and up to 30,000 per month. However, the converted V balance has a fixed one-year validity, so exchange to solve an actual redemption need rather than merely moving points between apps.

PayPay or Rakuten — which is better for everyday spending?

They suit different lives. PayPay is a QR-code payment app accepted at huge numbers of small shops and convenience stores, great for on-the-spot everyday spending and Yahoo/SoftBank users. Rakuten is a broader ecosystem (shopping, bank, card, mobile, securities) that rewards consolidating your spending online and across services. If your spending is mostly in-person and small, PayPay is convenient; if you buy online and want compounding across services, Rakuten tends to reward loyalty more.
