Computing real mile value
No mile has a fixed cash value. To value one, divide (comparable cash fare − award taxes/fees − benefits forgone) by miles used. A ¥100,000 cash itinerary requiring 50,000 miles and ¥20,000 of award taxes yields (100,000 − 20,000) ÷ 50,000 = ¥1.60 per mile. Crucially, the “comparable cash fare” should be the fare you would really buy, not an expensive flexible fare chosen to inflate the number, and taxes, airport charges, and fuel surcharges do not disappear on award tickets. Inputs should also include positioning travel, change/cancellation risk, points transferred, transfer ratio, and miles likely to expire. Show value per redeemed mile, value per original credit-card point, value after any transfer bonus, and the comparison with cash or statement-credit redemption — then transfer only if the award genuinely beats those alternatives.
